Sondre getting a drink of water

I’ve seen Sondre Lerche a few times, but Friday’s (12.03.04) show at Cane’s was by far the best.

Situated on the beach, Cane’s was not the shithole bar it’s made out to be (to quote my new friend Marvin: Chain Reaction in Anaheim, now that’s a shithole!). It was clean, well-ventilated and spacious. There were no people pushing or shoving their way to the stage. I stood front and center with ease.

I didn’t even mind the completely off-key girl who stood singing every single song at the top of her lungs in my ear. Maybe it was the drinks I had, but I found it comically bad and became overcome with hysterics at certain points.

I also didn’t mind the group of apparently, native Norwegians, standing behind me screaming out for Sondre and holding up a giant flag of Norway between songs. It was precious.

I love Sondre solo, but I also enjoy him with a full-band. He played a few songs by himself before the Golden Republic, who had opened, accompanied him on stage. It was perfect, the best of both worlds, in my opinion.

It was amazing to hear him sing Bing Crosby and Chet Baker a cappella for the encore.

The San Diego show was the last stop on his US tour. He chatted quite a bit about it and how thankful he was for the support of his crew and TGR. Sondre is such a sweetheart.

I went to the show by myself, and met up with some really interesting people: two lovely girls, Amrita and Kami and the super cool, Marvin. Meeting them was another highlight of the evening for me. Thanks guys for letting me hang out with y’all!

We hung around and chatted with Sondre after the show. Marvin designs the most awesome Sondre shirts I’ve ever seen; even better than the ones Sondre sells (!). Marvin is a rockstar in his own right. Sondre totally remembered him and his shirts and appeared giddy when given the latest design.

As for myself, being the nerd that I am, I made him a mixed CD, aptly titled: The Sondre Sat On My Lap And It Kicked Ass! Mix. Sondre was most pleased when he noticed Wham!’s Young Guns (Go For It) on the tracklist.

Sondre also kindly answered my 3 Questions, looking like he was taking an exam.

He looked up and asked, in the most adorable accent ever:

What do you call those things Spiderman has…from his wrists…that come out? (making a pulling gesture with his hand to his wrist)

And everyone replied: Uh, Webs, Sondre. Webs.

It was funny.

Sondre remembered the lap incident and so I posed the question:
So, do you want to do it again?
And he smiled and said:
Sure!, while moving to pull a stool out for me.

I sat down on the stool and patted my leg for him to sit on and he explains, in the cutest way:

So, I’m going to pretend to sit on you, okay?

Of course, even though he was “pretending” and not placing all of his weight on me, he was pretty darn heavy.

So there we sat, Sondre on my lap, arms wrapped; everyone was hooting and hollering. As luck would have it, the picture wasn’t saved properly on my camera and with extreme disappointment, I have nothing to show for this excellent moment.

Sigh, nothing but sweet memories.

Amrita is working on a documentary about love and was able to interview Sondre on camera. She posed her own questions to him. And it was, seriously, the coolest thing ever to witness Sondre discuss his opinions on love.

    Molly! Glad you liked the pics and stuff. Aw, I’m old enough to be Sondre’s mom. If anything, I feel maternal towards him, in a “I wonder if he’s taking his vitamins?” kind of way. He must know it and hence, willingly sits on my lap. Haha!

    I’m sure he was wearing the same shirt. I think Sondre has a limited wardrobe and a fondness for plaid.
