Il Divo made me do it.

I was originally going to write about how much I love the new Of Montreal, but then I started listening to this instead. . .

Wow.

That Smithereens Beatles cover album is really good!

I don’t know if anyone out there is a Beatles or a Smithereens fan, but you should check it out.

As for myself, well. . . you may, or may not know, that the very first CD I ever purchased was Please Please Me at a store called Fedco.

And, Beatlemania at Knott’s Berry Farm’s little theatre, was my very first “concert” experience.

Yeah, they were a cover band and they totally tried to look like The Beatles through the years… and well, my mom took me in the sixth grade after much begging and yes, it ruled.

As for The Smithereens, I still have Green Thoughts on vinyl.

“Til There Was You” is one of my fave tracks right now. And “All I’ve Got To Do” rocks. I’m thoroughly impressed and will totally play one on the podcast.

I love that the songs still sound like The Smithereens and not just straight up Beatles, if that makes sense.

I’m going to make a copy of this for my Dad. He needs to stop listening to his Gloria Estefan and omg, I dunno if I mentioned how he was here this weekend.

After a trip to Fry’s to get the card thingy to make his (gasp) PC laptop “wireless”, he, as expected, ended up browsing the DVD section for the remainder of the Fry’s shopping experience.

What he ended up with was a live concert DVD of some plastic operatic boy band called Il Divo.

Sweet Jesus.

They sang covers of things like “Un-Break My Heart” and “All By Myself” and it was just a full-fledged craptacular experience.

I ended up watching the bonuses, the interviews, the rehearsals, and music videos on Repeat.

Okay, it sucked, but there’s something about this DVD which renders you weak and kinda paralyzed, and I found myself feeling too lazy to get up and move and ended up suffering the repeat menu song again and again and again.

(Y’all know what I’m talking about, right? The menus on DVDs . . . how they have some awful song that loops. Yeah. We’re talking Il Divo Hell. One of the circles in Dante’s Inferno.)

Several times I urged M while she was busy playing, “Hey, turn this off!” or “Why don’t we watch some Strawberry Shortcake? . . . Please!”

My dad said, in full-on couch lounging mode, “Joy, they were made by that American Idol guy… you know, what’s his name… umm… you know!”

Closes eyes. Resumes nap mode.

Me, “Simon Cowell?”

Dad, opening an eye, “Yes!”

Me, “So, is that supposed to make me think they’re not crap or something?” . . .

Oh, one observation about Il Divo, they all have really huge nostrils.

Oh and another thing, Il Divo is evil, bad stuff.

Speaking from my firsthand encounter with one of their DVDs, their god awful pop song covers also encourages mindless snacking.

You have been warned.

Btw, I just made this little tribute to my dad mosaic on Flickr.

  3. ... and Il Divo.

Admit it, Birdy! You’ve got some of that in rotation too. :P

  4. I confess. They’re right after Iggy Pop, right before Johnny Cash.

  5. The second guy from the left on your link looks like Leo on Charmed.I believe the il Divo circle is the one closest to Satan in the Inferno. He can keep a close eye on them that way so they don’t release any more bleeeech. Oh and I like the enlisting of M to get the video changed routine, strong tactical move, Grandpa’s can’t resist kid requests.

  6. Wow! The Smithereens! Thanks for reminding me! I listened to Green Thoughts at least every other day through college. Then life happened and they fall off my radar. Until today. And I bet they sound a lot better than the beattles. Like a freight train, I bet.
